Key West Video Announced as a 2022 National and Local Excellence Award Winner by UpCity!

best of 2018

One of our favourite things about the end of the year is best of lists. Since 2018 will soon be over, we’re doing a roundup of some of the best in entertainment over the past year. These categories are all subjective—our top movie could be one you despised—so we’re calling in the experts. Use these links and ideas to build your own best of 2018 list. Happy listening, reading, and watching!

Best Films

Looking for some good flicks to watch over the holiday break? Look no further! This video countdown is practically a film unto itself. Everyone around here agrees that it has some pretty incredible editing. IndieWire’s Senior Film Critic David Erlich has been doing these countdowns every year since 2012 and his list includes mainstream blockbusters (A Star is Born), foreign language films (Roma), documentaries (Minding the Gap) and plenty more to keep you glued to your tv and reassessing the world at large. Bonus list of animated movies here.

Best Fiction

Did the last book you read inspire you? Or transport you to another world? Perhaps it taught you something? This best of 2018 category is for those who miss transit stops, lose track of time, and stay home on a Saturday night because they’re deeply involved with a good book.

The New York Times short but sweet list has something for everyone. Educated is a best-selling memoir telling the story of growing up isolated by religion and homeschooling in the wilds of Idaho. Canadian author, and two-time Scotiabank Giller Prize winner, Esi Edugyan makes the cut with Washington Black. Go undercover as a guard at a rural Louisiana correctional facility when you dive into American Prison. It’s time to put the kettle on and settle in for a good, long read.

Best Television

Netflix was a tv leader this year

Television has come to mean so much more than Must See TV. This best of 2018 list from NPR has only a small main network representation. The rest of the content is being produced by specialty networks and online streaming services. Laugh your way through The Good Place and Barry. There are two LGBTQ-centred shows on the list and one series that examines the relationship between race and the NBA. There are friendships, romantic encounters, and scandals that all make an appearance. Have a look at the recommendations and see whether you can convince your SO to try something new when you sit down on the couch tonight.

Best Music

From hip-hop to electropop, this list has you covered

Listen up: some really good music dropped this year. Rolling Stone has a top 50 albums list that will expose you to every genre from electropop to country. Folk Singer Brandi Carlile had a big year with the release of By the Way, I Forgive You. Did you catch her cameo in the remake of A Star is Born? Aubrey Graham, also known as Jimmy Brooks or Drake, gets props for his album Scorpion. There are musical veterans like Elvis Costello and newcomers like Lindsay Jordan (Snail Mail) with music worth checking out. This compilation will provide hours of distraction during your commute.

Best of 2018: It Was a Very Good Year

This year kept us busy with some pretty stellar entertainment options. Working in video production, we’re inspired by film and tv in particular. And literature and music. It’s all part of finding the best way to tell a story and connect with an audience. We’ll keep returning to the best of 2018 picks and keep our eyes open for even more motivating material in 2019.
