How You Can Break the Fourth Wall In Corporate Videos

Ever wondered what it might look like to break the fourth wall in corporate video?

In film, we know that breaking the fourth wall is a technique used to break out of a scene. Usually, actors and performers operate within the fourth wall. This means that they are largely unaware that they are fictional characters in a body of work.

Breaking the fourth wall means a character, for a moment, acknowledges that they are fictionalized and speaks directly to the audience. We’ve seen this in movies like Deadpool and shows like House of Cards where the character acknowledges the audience to either entertain or better inform us.

In corporate video, this is a bit tricky. Typically, a corporate video already addresses its audience. It spends the entire time talking directly to the camera. But for corporate videos with storylines, it might be a little different.

Corporate videos can tell interesting stories. They involve characters that need to be explored and acted out by on-camera talent. Sometimes, they can be so enthralling that we forget we’re watching a corporate video.

That’s the point.

Corporate videos shouldn’t feel like we’re being marketed to. Much like film and television, they should run smoothly and seamlessly and throw the audience right in to whatever story you’re trying to tell.

Depending on the type of corporate video you’re creating, it can be a great payoff to the audience to have your actor break out of character and address the real issues with your industry/field, customer concerns, or bad product reviews.

It’s a creative way to show that you listen to your audience and in turn, your audience will listen to you.
