A Good Camera
You don’t need anything fancy but having an updated camera will enhance the quality of your self-tape. You can always use your cellphone as well just make sure the quality is good and that casting directors can see your eyes.
A Microphone
Having great sound quality means casting directors can hear you just as well as they can see you with a good camera. You don’t have to go crazy and get the most expensive pro mic on the market either. You can find great affordable options on Amazon. If you’re shooting with your phone, you can get shot gun mics and Lav mics that will work with your phone.
A Backdrop
You’re also going to need a backdrop for your self-tape. Again, you don’t need something fancy and can find great affordable options on Amazon! Do you have a clean bed sheet? You can hang that up and voila! You have a new backdrop for your self-tape.
Tripod
You don’t necessarily need a tripod if you have a steady surface to mount your camera on but having a tripod will really help stabilize your self-tape. It also means you don’t need someone behind the camera to be holding the camera to keep things steady. If you’re using your phone make sure you get a smartphone adaptor for the tripod.
Lights
One of the most important parts of a self-tape is to make sure that you’re visible. Getting a good set of lights is key. If you have space, opt for a 3 point lighting set up but if not, a ring light is a great option as well!
