As we embrace social media more and more, it’s no wonder we’ve turned to solidifying a digital presence. Instagram is no exception.

The past few years have shown us that public social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and even Snapchat are so much more than avenues for social acceptance. If taken seriously (and strategically), social media platforms can be used to widen conversations that brands struggle to have with diverse audiences, and reach them in ways they’d never before thought possible.

As Instagram rose in popularity, it only made sense that it would catch any online marketer’s eye.

A recent post on Mashable highlighted how much Instagram users with massive followings actually earn per post. It’s not a secret that those with followers in the hundreds of thousands are paid to promote things such as events, products, causes, or services. As popular Instagram accounts rose, so did the market potential for specific products and services. Companies began to approach Instagrammers for business marketing opportunities (similar in concept to YouTube) for things like detox teas, hair and beauty products, and clothing lines. Even photographers saw the potential to really showcase their work and find potential modeling partnerships.

But the question then became: how exactly does one tap into this hidden market gem?

Well, to put it quite simply, you ask.

Now, imagine this: what if more and more companies took the time to really understand their audience? By targeting posts, using hashtags, and posting at optimal times, brands could stand to benefit from previously untouchable audiences.

But if you’re a company who isn’t breaking grounds on social media (or doesn’t have the funding to invest time into market research), one option is to just pay those who already have a significant following to do it for you. Are you a beauty brand looking to cater to specific darker skin tones? Contact beauty vloggers Instagrammers with followings in the high hundreds of thousands (or even millions). It can literally be that simple.

Alas, the plot thickens. You are not limited to photography. What if you were able to not only get a photo onto a popular Instagram account but a video, too?

Since Instagram introduced video, a multitude of well-known brands used their previously established audience to capitalize on the app’s then-new technology. The results were phenomenal. A Look At Facebook's Difficult Relationship with Video Advertising

Gone are the days when advertising could be determined by a number of buys from a newspaper, magazine or even TV set.

Now in the 21st century, advertising has become that much more difficult to measure.

Add in modern technologies (for video in film and television), and you’re left with a cluster of extra, uncurated data and an immeasurable amount of potential eyes viewing your ad.

For social media (Facebook in particular), this poses a specific problem – especially when it comes to video ads.

With such a wide scale, narrowing down who is watching what and for how long can be extremely difficult when it comes to Facebook video advertisements. What constitutes an actual view on Facebook is difficult to determine. Facebook admitted that it miscalculated average video viewing times (by inflating performance numbers) when it failed to factor in those who watch videos for less than 3 seconds. Mashable pointed out that “an average that doesn’t account for the total number of viewers, whether they’re engaged or not, is probably not much of an average” and that Facebook had set 3 seconds or less as the benchmark for audience engagement.

Clearly, this wasn’t the case.

With the rise of social media, engagement is equated with success. Often pitted against each other are YouTube and Facebook, which, when you really break it down, have entirely different ways of measuring audience engagement. For example, YouTube is able to know when a video plays, how long it plays for, and whether or not it is stopped. Though it doesn’t know (and probably never will) whether or not you are physically tuned in behind your screen, it is able to offer some helpful metrics to better determine viewership and engagement.

Another thing worth noting is that YouTube opens up a separate page for videos, whereas Facebook’s videos are embedded on the main page. This makes it difficult to really determine who is watching what and why. It’s especially difficult considering Facebook’s recent video feature that rolls viewer onto other related videos without their consent. Autoplay then becomes a weak indicator of actual audience engagement, further affecting tangible Facebook video ad results.

As a corporate company struggling to find a home for your video, it might be best to consider what sort of impact you want to have on your viewers.  Are you in it for the tangible, easier-to-understand results YouTube brings? Or do you want your video(s) to autoplay onto your viewers’ feeds? Do you care about your content being grouped with a potential competitor?

It is easy to say that video is a big part of any companies marketing strategy. The truth is that online video marketing has become more important every year, and the trend is only gaining momentum. Marketers are finding more innovative and targeted ways to use online video to interact with their audiences, and are having great success utilizing video as a tool. The following are just a few of the trends that we believe 2015 has in store.

Longer length

Due to the fact Smart TV’s are now becoming more and more common in the average person’s home, individuals have the ability to easily stream online videos like they would a TV show or a movie. Therefore audiences are more likely to watch longer online videos on a larger screen, within the comfort of their home.

Don’t get me wrong though, this trend is just in its infant stage. Short and sweet is still the reigning king. YouTube says 50% of their traffic is from mobile devices (VideoUniversity.com).

We will continue to direct our clients to produce videos that won’t deter people from watching due to their length, and will communicate the right information in a short amount of time.

However in certain scenarios, especially for the type of content that one might watch when at home on their TV, such as a web series or viral video, the format is expanding. Even though Instagram allows for 15 second clips, and vine only 6 seconds, there will be more of a distinction between videos for mobile viewing, and online videos which will be watched on a big screen. We will have to wait and see just how impactful this new trend may become in 2015.

Video Landing Pages

We all know that video is important to a company’s online presence. The image below showcases how web placement is still the number one use of video for marketing needs. Audiences are more likely to watch a video on someone’s website rather than read the surrounding content any day. So the trend we anticipate to see more of in 2015 is video landing pages.

If the company has a new product out, is launching a new campaign, or simply wants to explain who they are, a landing page video is an excellent way to do that. What it does is directs users to what to pay attention to first. It tells them, this is the most important information I need you to know about right away. And we believe audiences will appreciate that.

It helps set the tone for who the company is and allows you to focus on the most important information that you want to get across to your viewers. A landing page is fully customizable, so you can really create some unique user experiences. As always, a strong call to action throughout and at the end of the video will help hit the message home.

If I haven’t convinced you yet, Marketing Tech Blog found that adding video to a landing page resulted in a 130.5% increase in leads (goanimate.com). How’s that for some reassurance?

More Animation

Animation is something that has been around for quite some time, and in a wide range of forms. Today we have exceptional 3D animators who can create a fantasy world right before our eyes. There are also tons of uses for animation in the corporate video sphere: you probably have seen a fair share of infographics and whiteboard style videos.

We anticipate to see more of this trend in 2015, and in a variety of creative yet cost-effective forms. Animation provides the ability to represent virtually anything you want. Forget about the weather, time of day, or hiring quality on-screen talent, all you need is a solid script and an interesting way of expressing it visually.

Animation provides endless possibilities and we forecast that brands are going to be utilizing this medium extensively in 2015. Now we will just have to wait and see!
