Blocks happen to the best of us.
From artists to corporate execs, everyone at some point undergoes mental blocks.
Whether it’s creative or simply organizational, these mental blocks can hinder you from achieving your day-to-day activities.
They can be stressful in our fast-paced society. They also induce guilt about not being able to get things done in a timely fashion. This causes things to weigh heavily on your mind.
When our minds go through creative blocks, it’s because we are waiting for some out-of-body experience to overtake us and create. A lot of artists describe themselves as being mere vessels of their work, disassociating from the idea that they generate the work on their own.
This isn’t always correct.
Often times, the best way to work through a creative or mental block is to do just that – work through it. Being talented isn’t enough, and creativity doesn’t stop with ideas. It, much like everything else in life, requires hard work. One creator speaks about the utility of creativity, describing it as “not [being] about finding the ‘one’ idea, but rather about using creativity to achieve everyday personal and professional goals.”
One way to overcome a creative block in one area is to rely on the same process for everyday necessities. When we live outside of our comfort zone, it warms our minds up to constantly being able to mentally shape-shift (as opposed to thinking traditionally). By being able to exercise different ways to tackle a project creates a more nuanced final product.
Thinking compartmentally also helps us to break a creative block. This can be done by thinking about it abstractedly (e.g. instead of a toaster, think of the parts that make it such as toast, knobs, heat etc.), working backwards, playing with shapes and tones, and thinking about a piece of work from different perspectives (i.e. different walks of life)
