How Twitter Storytelling Can Change Your Corporate Video Campaign

Who’d ever thought that Twitter could one day change the storytelling game?

Storytelling is nothing new. In fact, we’ve been telling stories since the beginning of time. But the way we tell those stories, however, has changed drastically. From oral traditions and folklores to written accounts, reports, novels, and essays, we’ve all witnessed and experienced how storytelling can evolve. Now, in the 21st century, we’ve become privy to modern mediums: audio storytelling (radio), novels, visual art, photography, and motion picture.

Our newest phenomenon, social media, however, might’ve changed the game one more time.

Mashable recently put out an article that highlighted two fiction writers who’d built a horror story on Twitter. Twitter and Tumblr created the idea of a Rihanna and Lupita N’yongo collaboration for a heist film, set to be directed by Ava Duvernay and written by Issa Rae.

And who could ever forget the epic stripper saga by Aziah “Zola” Wells? The story turned Twitter upside down after immediately going viral. The story is rumoured to be directed by James Franco in the near future.

With so much hoopla around social media, it leads one to awe at just how important Twitter has become in the past few year. And furthermore, it leads one to wonder just where the future of storytelling is going.

Perhaps the fate of corporate video isn’t so much in the message, but the medium. Gone are the days when viewers watched 10-15 minute videos. We’ve become so accustomed to short-form content that maybe the answer lies in a series of short tweeted videos.

Companies can take note of how Twitter stories unfold. They’re usually in the form of threads. This means that one tweet is followed up by a continuation of that tweet. Twitter users are allowed to post videos as tweets (and also videos to accompany tweets) to tell stories, too.

Imagine the possibilities.
