Mindfulness as defined by the Oxford dictionary is the “quality or state of being conscious or aware of something” or “a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.”

Mindfulness is a growing topic and plenty of workplaces have started incorporating this into their environment as it improves employee mental health.

Mindfulness meditation

Mindfulness meditation is all about being present in the moment without judging yourself for not being in the present. It’s definitely easier said than done but the focus of this mediation is to improve your skill bit by bit.

Apps you can use

If you’re struggling with where to start there are a few apps that can help!

Headspace

Headspace launched in 2010 as an event company. However, since attendees voiced their need for taking these lessons home with them the app was formed. The app is subscription-based and gives you a new meditation every day.

Smiling Mind

Smiling mind is an app similar to Headspace. This app however is free to use and is more focused on youth mental health. It also has guided meditations for beginnners

Oak Meditation

Oak is another meditation app that has a library of ambient sounds and guided mediation. This app isn’t as extensive as Smiling Mind and Headspace but still a great option!

Mindfulness Benefits

As we mentioned before mindfulness has a plethora of benefits. It doesn’t matter what profession you’re in or where you are in life, mindfulness can be of use to you.

Mindfulness has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve memory. It’s also shown that it can better equip your body to fight off illness. You can implement more mindful moments into your workplace by having group guided meditation or providing your employees subscriptions to various mental health apps.
